What is Net Neutrality?
There are hundreds of articles explaining what the fuss is all about. Articles use different analogies explaining what the Telecom providers are doing & how our freedom to use internet is being exploited. Here is another such analogy, but an easier one to relate!
Every household in India uses milk. Now the milkman charges everyone equally. He doesn’t charge extra bucks because we are using the milk he provided to make kheer. In simple words, milk is milk irrespective of whether we use it to drink/eat or use it to shower like Sunny Leone does. And the price of the milk is fixed per litre. Likewise the price of internet we use should be fixed no matter what we use it for.

What the Geeks are doing?
Recent support of e-commerce giant Flipkart for Airtel Zero has created an outrage among people and they have started giving 1 star ratings and have filled social media with outrage.
In short, everyone is voicing their opinions & trying to unite the people fighting for the same cause. Saving the internet!
What might happen if we don’t save the internet?
The worst thing that could happen is that we would be forced to stick to a few specific apps or websites which the service providers choose to charge less. Basically we will be told what videos to watch or which website to shop from. Our choice won’t be our choice any more!
This also means that a company needs to pay the service provider to reach it’s customers. A well established company making a lot money can find it easy, but what about the budding startups that might be the next Google or Facebook?
Some telecom service providers like Bharati Airtel have succeeded in convincing TRAI to let them block some apps & websites. In other words, they have convinced TRAI to regulate the internet. And all this is a clear violation of Net Neutrality!
It’s our duty to claim what is rightfully ours, the Internet!
Spread the word! Save the internet!
